Root canal treatment (RCT): what to expect, and what it costs
A root canal has an unfair reputation. In reality it is the treatment that relieves a bad toothache and saves a tooth that would otherwise be removed. Here is what actually happens, so you know what to expect.
Why would I need one?
Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. If a deep cavity, a crack or an injury lets bacteria reach it, the pulp becomes infected. Typical signs are severe or throbbing pain, pain that wakes you at night, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling of the gum, or a tooth that has darkened. Only an examination and an X-ray can confirm the cause.
What happens during treatment?
- The dentist numbs the area with local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure.
- The infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned.
- The space is shaped and sealed so bacteria cannot return.
- The tooth is restored. Many root canal teeth, especially back teeth, need a crown afterwards to protect them from cracking.
How long does it take?
A session takes about 45 to 60 minutes, and most teeth need 1 to 2 visits. Mild soreness for 1 to 2 days is common and usually settles. A well-restored tooth can last 10 years or more.
What does it cost at our clinic?
Prices below are per tooth and are published on our Services page. The final price depends on the tooth and how complex it is, and is always confirmed at consultation.
